I recently purchased a ROK manual espresso press. I am extremely pleased with the coffee it produces. The machine is clearly very well made, however the plastic tamper it came with is not: it’s lightweight, non-symmetrical (doubles as a scoop), and doesn’t fit the portafilter of the machine. I decided to make a solid metal tamper that would solve all these problems.
I eventually want a cast iron tamper for its weight and surface finish, but I decided to practice first on a piece of 6062 aluminum. I roughed out the shape of the hemispherical handle by eye with a cutoff tool. I took a finishing pass with a programmed CNC radius command.
Now I’m making the cast iron version. Stay tuned!
